2003 El Molino Rutherford Pinot Noir – Valued at $100

The Rutherford sub-region of Napa Valley centers on the town of Rutherford and covers some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyard real estate, spanning from the Mayacamas in the west, to the Vaca Mountains on the other side of the valley. Inside of the Rutherford AVA, bordering the Mayacamas, is a stretch of uplands called the Rutherford Bench. (These bench lands technically run the length of Oakville as well). Mountain runoff creates deep, well-drained, alluvial soils on the bench, giving vine roots plenty of reason to permeate deep into the ground. The result is wine with great structure and complexity. Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, ...

Collio Pinot Grigio Schiopetto – Valued at $40

The wine is obtained exclusively from Pinot Grigio grapes, a varietal of French origin, cultivated in hilly areas, in soil which is of average marl composition. The bunches are small with round grapes red – grey in colour, and like Pinot Bianco it derives from a mutation of Pinot Nero. The grapes are hand picked, pressed in a soft press after which there follows a brief period of decantation in total absence of sulphur dioxide. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks under a controlled temperature. The ageing takes place on the lees for 8 months. The aroma is fresh and inviting, with notes of banana and passion fruit. Savory on the ...

2007 Walter Hansel Estate Chardonnay – Valued at $30

Walter Hansel himself started with 257 Chardonnay vines planted in the Russian River Valley in the 1970s. The first commercially-available vintage was released in 1996, and today the estate's Sonoma County vineyards cover 80 hectares (198 acres) of land planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with an additional vineyard planted to Sauvignon Blanc in Lake County. All of the vineyards are hand-harvested and sorted, and the blocks are fermented separately. The Pinot Noir grapes are destemmed and gravity-fed into open-top fermenters, while the Chardonnay grapes are pressed in whole clusters and fermented in French oak. Generously donated from the ...

2018 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc Mary’s Block – Valued at $75

Through a rare blend of grace and grit, Mary Weber Novak quietly established Spottswoode as one of Napa Valley’s first-growth caliber family wine estates. In 1984, just two years after the inaugural vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Spottswoode began pioneering Sauvignon Blanc – well before this grape was recognized as one of the finest white varietals. It was Mary’s favorite wine. With Mary’s enthusiastic encouragement, a unique 1.07-acre parcel was planted in 2000 in the southwestern corner of the vineyard adjacent to the banks of Spring Creek. In honor of her we named it Mary’s Block, and we have bottled this special Estate Sauvignon Blanc ...

1997 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino – Valued at $80

The rolling hills of Tuscany are home to ancient vines that grew wild long before modern times. Sangiovese is the variety of the region's best-known wines, Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti. In recent years, “Super Tuscans"—blends including non-native Bordeaux varieties—have gained in popularity and acclaim. The region's Mediterranean climate, with its warmer average temperatures, provides ideal conditions for the development of rich, structured, and age-worthy wines. A Brunello for everyone. Solid and focused, with mineral, blackberry and licorice character. Full-bodied and very chunky, with lots of round tannins and a long, long finish. ...

2010 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello – Valued at $185

Humming with energy and life from the very moment you put your nose in the glass, Marchesi Antinori's 2010 Tignanello shows magnificent aromatic layering and an enormous capacity to peel back and reveal itself in beautiful slow motion. This is an articulate wine with a long story to tell about the quality of its profound 2010 fruit. This Tignanello has the elegance of 2004 and the structure of 2007. A brief note on the structure: The mouthfeel here is not broad and big. Instead, it shows a sharp and elegantly streamlined feel with impressive persistency. Compared to 2009, the Sangiovese component is slightly higher with 80% of the noble Tuscan variety ...

1991 Taylor “Quinta de Vargellas” Vintage Port – Valued at $150

The opaque purple color is followed by aromatics that are more closed than most 1991s. In the mouth, it is a wine of extraordinary richness and brilliantly delineated components. This exceptionally rich, backward port possesses layer upon layer of fruit, a thick, chewy, unctuous texture, firm structure and tannin, and a finish that lasts for more than a minute. It is an exquisite port that will age for 25-30 years and is currently hard to find. Generously donated from the wine cellar of Allen Snyder

2015 James Joseph Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon – Valued at $60

Written with the drama of a Steinbeck novel, these reserve-level Cabernet Sauvignons, grown on noteworthy mountainside vineyards are so incredibly vivid, they leave your mind swimming.  The 2015’s from James Joseph are spellbindingly good. Penned from the inks of Spring and Diamond Mountains as well as Mount Veeder, they’ve been meticulously scribed by Grant Long Jr., the same author that makes the ever popular Steps and Witchery Reserve wines.  Those of you who tasted ANY of the previous vintages, need to read no further, other than to embrace the knowlege that the 2015’s, as expected, deliver $100/btl quality at a price that’s an epic ...
